Blagoveshchensky Cathedral Undercroft

The undercroft of the Annunciation Cathedral is a historic underground space whose lighting requires a special approach. The project was completed in 2010. Stefan Schneider participated in the work as project manager and lighting designer as part of Tochka Opory Promelectrosvet LLC.

Lighting an undercroft is a distinct type of challenge in museum practice. Underground spaces have their own character: limited natural light, specific surface materials, special operating conditions. Light here becomes not a supplement to natural lighting, but the primary means of shaping the visual environment. It reveals the architecture, ensures safe movement of visitors while preserving the sense of the space’s historical character.

Lighting parameters — color temperature, color rendering index, illumination levels, directionality of light flow — are selected with particular care. Light must correctly represent materials, not distort perception, and remain visually delicate. Managing a project of this nature involved participation at all stages — from concept development to technical implementation.
